I would love Fountas and Pinnell's thoughts on when guided reading groups should be starting in classrooms after a school year begins. We are doing discussions about assessment calendars and expectations in my district. This would be a 2 part question:

(A) If a district administers the BAS in the spring, they wouldn't necessarily need to readminister in the beginning of the year, correct? If no BAS was being administered and teachers spent time at the beginning of the year to teach routines and procedures for guided reading time, when would be a logical time for guided reading groups to be starting? 5 weeks after school starts? 4 weeks? 6 weeks?

(B) If a district DID decide to administer the BAS at the beginning of the year and teachers took time to teach routines and procedures for independent work time, what would be the reasonable expectation to have guided reading groups starting after doing BOTH of those things at the beginning of a school year? How long should teachers have to set up routines and administer a BAS to an entire class?

We want to make sure to advocate for teachers to have time to do important beginning of the year teaching and time to assess, but we don't want guided reading to be starting too late in the school year. What are reasonable expectations for both Scenario A and Scenario B?

There are no absolutes with specific times because it depends on the students, teacher, and situations. With that being said it is typical that the first year students enter school whether PK, K, or 1st grade, it takes at least two-eight weeks to teach routines and procedures to expect independent self-regulated learning in a classroom community. If a school has a cohesive system in place with similar routines in each grade level the transitions won't take as long with each additional year. In the new FP Classroom, Fountas and Pinnell suggest that at about 8 weeks Kinder should be able to start guided reading groups, about 5- 6 weeks for 1st grade.

This could be the case for either scenario. If the BAS is being administered at the beginning of the year the conferences are usually done during the guided reading group time and should be completed within 2 weeks. (BAS Assessment Guides Section 1)

There are many factors to consider when creating a schedule. The amount of time allotted to small group instruction during the day, the number of students per teacher, how knowledgeable the teachers are for the most efficient assessment conferences (that take 30 minutes per student or less), to name a few. It is admirable that you are advocates for the teachers having time for assessment and the students time in learning.
