It has always been our understanding that we alternate between fiction and non-fiction when administering the BAS (for example - H=fiction, I=non-fiction, J=fiction, etc.). We have a few teachers that have heard a different message and believe they should only assess one at a time (for example - fall assessments = fiction, winter assessments = non-fiction, spring assessments = fiction). Can you please respond and state the research behind why it is best practice to alternate assessments? We believe that you get better information regarding reading behaviors when you look at both fiction and non-fiction, and can make better decisions regarding instruction, but some of our co-workers do not believe this. Any insight from Fountas and Pinnell would be GREATLY appreciated.

The BAS Assessment Guide explains this procedure. If teachers are not following the directions for administration in alternating F and NF texts they are changing the standards making the instrument less valid and reliable. These directions begin on p. 2 and are repeated on p. 17 (page numbers refer to the BAS 1 3rd edition).

The research for BAS can be found under the Research and Standards tab on this website. Literacy assessment should include literacy in all genres taught.
Best wishes for success!
