Hello!

Is it possible for teachers to use chapter books for guided reading? If so, how would it work? This would be a change for many teachers if they can not, they are used to using chapter books.
Thank you so much!!

Leveled texts include both chapter books and shorter texts. Experiencing a variety of genres is very important in the development of reading proficiency, and you will want to include a wide range of genres in your leveled-book collection. Instruction in guided reading usually includes naming the type of text and noticing characteristics that fit the genre. A wide range of genres should be included: expository, procedural, and persuasive texts, narrative nonfiction texts, fantasy, realistic fiction, historical fiction, traditional literature (folktales, fairy tales, fables), biography, hybrid texts, and special types of fiction such as mysteries and adventure stories. There are series books and books with sequels. Using the shorter texts allows for increased possibility of exposure to a variety of genres as well as increasing the text features and text complexity during instruction. The critical piece is including a large variety of genre as indicated by the Literacy Continuum for each gradient text level.

We wish you success,
Helenann
