Hello all!

We are adopting F&P in our elementaries (which is what we also use in our middle schools).

Two things I'm looking for guidance on:
1) One of the biggest questions is if the BAS truly measures all parts of foundational reading (phonemic awareness and phonics, specifically)?
2) Our PK uses JUNIOR to assess. Is it suggested that F&P is used in PK at all?

1) Yes. How children search for and use visual information, how they solve words, the range of strategic actions they use to monitor and correct when reading are all critical aspects of the reading processes being assessed with BAS in text reading. For more in depth information of specific aspects of visual information there are developmentally appropriate Optional Assessments for each grade level including phonemic awareness and phonics. It is helpful for teachers to have professional development in using BAS and analyzing records for these strategic actions.
2)The BAS has Optional Assessments that are appropriate for PK. The text reading is usually not appropriate for PK students. For more information about PK explore this link for Literacy Beginnings. https://www.fountasandpinnell.com/literacybeginnings/

You can explore BAS at the following link, https://www.fountasandpinnell.com/bas/#
Explore more about the Phonics and Word Study resource at https://www.fountasandpinnell.com/phonics/ This system includes assessments similar to those found in the BAS Optional Assessments. This link includes further links for exploration in the research of phonics that may be of interest to you.

Best wishes as you explore!
Debbie
