How were the HF words for the lists in Optional Assessments selected and why are some on one list vs another?
We'd like to use them for K-3 benchmarks and screening, but which lists would be recommended for each grade level by end of year? For example, the 25 HF list may be good for Kgtn, but the Continuum recommends 100 by end of 1st grade, but which 100?

The definition of “high frequency” means it occurs frequently in the child’s world. Since that varies from child to child depending on the books they read there cannot be a “standard list” for each grade level. The lists in the Benchmark Optional Assessment are a sampling of words typically found in texts for the levels. Many children will know more words; ...the precise collection does not have to be the same for every child..." (Word Matters p. 89) The focus is on learning "how to learn words" and how to use known letters, words, spelling patterns, word structures, and word meanings to learn and/or solve new words; use them as resources that will help them learn to read and write other words.

Which 100 word list you use is your decision. Please refer to the directions which state “Why Use It” and “How to Use It” as you choose the list that will best meet your needs.

Best Wishes,
