Getting ready to start the red lessons on the 3 day schedule. Just wondering if the students take the book home every night. How does this work for the red levels on the 3 day lesson schedule. Thanks so much!

Your students may need to take the independent book home on the Even Numbered Lessons in order to finish reading the text. At the end of the lesson it states: “Reading the Text: Students begin to read the text silently if there is time.” On the Even Numbered Lesson day you most likely will need to send home the text for the students to complete the book. Since it is an independent level, students should be able to complete the text without support. This is a good habit/practice for struggling readers as they feel empowered and successful by their ability to do their homework on their own. On the Odd Numbered Lesson day, students should be reading/completing the whole book during the lesson since they will need some support. Books will also go home at the end of every novel study lesson. At the end of the lesson, it states: “Introduction to and Assignment of Reading: A brief statement [is provided] about what students will be expected to read at home, with additional information if needed, and a prompt for thinking. (This does not appear on Day 4 when book is finished.)”

I am not sure what you are referring to in terms of a ‘3 day lesson schedule’ since there are only five day lesson schedules included in the LLI Lesson Guide. The provided research, linked here: http://www.fountasandpinnell.com/research/ is based on the intermediate LLI system lessons conducted five days per week for 45 minutes per day. There is an alternative schedule in Appendix D of the LLI System Guide for a 30-Minute Variation of Standard (Odd- and Even-Numbered) Lesson Framework. This framework is also five days per week.

I hope this helps clarify.
