Fountas & Pinnell Classroom™: Spotlight on Midway Independent School District

The educators at Midway Independent School District sought an alternative method of literacy instruction beyond a traditional reading program, but their experience with Fountas & Pinnell Classroom™ (FPC) since 2018 has surpassed their expectations. Teachers have received a newfound confidence in their approach to literacy from the rich materials and scaffolded instruction of FPC. Beyond a new level of competency in literacy as measured through assessments and report cards, FPC has influenced the culture at Midway ISD, turning reluctant students into avid readers. A full spectrum of students have received a new level of support in their journey to read, including populations such as economically disadvantaged students, special education students, and advanced students.

Hillsboro City Schools, in Hillsboro, OH, is a district with over 2,000 students spread across five schools. Hillsboro adopted Fountas & Pinnell Classroom™ (FPC) during the 2018-2019 school year. Before implementation, Hillsboro Primary School 3rd grade achieved fewer scores at or above proficient compared to similar districts and the state average, then doubled or nearly doubled its proficiency advantage over both groups respectively after the first year of implementation.
