It is best to spend only one day per book allowing children to process text at their level with a focus on getting the main idea or message of the text while learning new strategic actions to problem solve. The text should be well within their control with a need for only a little teacher support. I would suggest reading the chapter on Guided Reading from Guided Reading Responsive Teaching Across the Grades by Fountas and Pinnell to guide your selection of texts as well as the planning and protocol for guided reading lessons.
