Can guided reading texts be shared across grade levels? For example, if a second grade teacher is in need of more texts at level K, would you recommend that she use level K texts from either the 1st grade or 3rd grade materials?

Yes. Leveled texts are for teachers to select what would be the best match with the group of students being taught. The levels provide ranges of behaviors to funnel the selection. Teachers should use the behaviors found in the Literacy Continuum to match with the readers' competencies to find which text provides the best next step in their learning that also fits their interests and other text factors used for analysis.
