Most start with a master list of all books. I have seen magazine holders used with 1 or more titles of a level placed in each holder. Books are listed by title and the label is placed on the front of the magazine holder. Each teacher has a set of one color of painted wooden clothespins which they attach to the holder where books have been removed. Where to return each title is easily viewed by the colored clothes pins when entering the room. No pens required and no cards to deal with. You can check out a number of other School Book Room ideas on Pinterest. You might also check in with other teachers to see what they are doing to organize their books. You can reach our Facebook group at this link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/FountasPinnell/
The key is eliminating the need for pens, library cards, separate files, etc.

Best Wishes,
Helenann
